Hawaii milk cap crWAILEA, Maui, Hawaii — AP — A week after Superman Comics included milk caps in their latest issue to test the Mainland market, the champions of the milk cap craze will come together on the island where the game was bom 60 years ago to raise money for 40 different Maui charities.Made of wax covered cardboard with a staple and a tab, and used as tops for glass milk bottles, milk caps first appeared nationally in the 1930s. Antique collectors prize the original milk caps made at the Haleakala Dairy on Maui which were first collected by island children to play a marbles-like game.We used to get milk caps on our glass milk bottles in school lunches, said collector and Haleakala Dairy owner Peter Baldwin, and we would save the caps to play with them.Twenty years ago, the dairy started printing caps again to reintroduce the game as part of a promotion for a new Passionfruit-Orange-Guava juice and they quickly were dubbed POGS. Then two years ago. a Maui native. Blossom Galbiso, a guidance teacher at an elementary school on Oahu, revitalized the game, using it as a motivational tool for her students.Now. milk cap mania has exploded all over Hawaii with businesses from television stations to banks making their own limited editions to sell or give away.
