It has not; it has grown. It has manv Americans seriouslv % %v orrieri. With this kind of flat misinformation put out by the Pentagon about Vietnam, what can we expect on the secret military buildup in Thailand ’Another Vietnam could be in themaking. The U.S. already has an estimated 37.000 troops in Thailand. They are mostiv airmen and logistics e^-All the nation has really been told about Thailand is that three B - 52 bombers landed last month at the U Taphao airbase at Sattahip. It takes quite a base to handle B-52's. Ob-\ -ouslv the U S. built it.By Bill VaughanI WAS going to suggest the establishment of a Bow Tie Hall of Fame to honor the retirement from the federal bench of Associate Justice Tom Clark, the first member of the Supreme Court to wear one, in modern times at least. But I can't think of any other people to put in it. Maybe von can.I would mention Cicero V ea\ er of the Weaver Brothers and Elviry who could make his bow tie spin like a propeller. I think it was some sort of a de\iee he had rigged up. But you’ve forgotten Cicero Weaver, chances are.President Johnson, as vou*know, may have to nominate several Supreme Court Justices. Tom Clark is retiring. so as not to embarrass'his son, the attorney general. (A gesture which, incidentally, should surely make tne Dad of the Year award a piece of cake for him ) But some of the oth-oi fellows are getting along in years, and we have to look ahead. As you Know, the Court is becoming pretty tightly structured. There is a Jewish seat, a Catholic seat, and so on.*Is there a bow tie seat, well, and if not why not? Tnere was a time within tne memory of some of us In mg people when they said no bow tie wearer would ever sit in the highest judicial body in the land. Tom Clark smashed that prejudice and it would betoo bad if his pioneering efforts were to go fornaught. Those who are more accustomed than i to frater-irzing with lawyers may know of a good bow-tie type to fill the vacancy. There suieiy must be some. Offhand I can only think of Soapy Williams, but he never seemed to me to be a dedicated bow-tie man.Well, I seem to have strayed into this matter of a bow-tie wearer on the Supreme Court. What I started out to talk about was the decline of the bow tie in all segments of the society.Harry Truman was our last bow-tie President. And our only one, unless you count those floppy things worn in the remote past, bv which I mean beforeWorld War I. Don’t down-rate haberdashery. It has influenced history. People resented Herbert Hoover’s high collars as much as they dia his economic policies. Maybe more. The bow tie was a great asset to Harry Truman. It made him seem jaunty at a time when the world needed a little jauntiness. Now when I say that the bow-tie has declined, I realize that I may be wrong. One spring I wrote that brown-and-white shoes were no longer worn. I had read it somewhere. The next day 1 noticed that all 18 of my then bosses were wearing brown and white shoes.Still, I think I am right about the bow-tie and I think it is a shame.People may ask why Ithink it is a shame. I sayfor several reasons. Firstof all I have about 21 bow-ties at home. Furthermore, I know how to tie a bow-tie and there is nothing that weakens a man’s morale like knowing he has a skill that is no longer in demand.Furthermore, the bow-tie is the only neat kind that you can wear while drinking out of a water fountain. A voice says that there are things known as tie tacks aiid clasps and clips that will hold the four-in-hand in place so you can wear it while drinking from a water fountain. I tell that voice that I do not want to be involved with that sort of peo-pie.The only advantage of a four-in-hand is that you can clean your eyeglasses with it, but we still have shirt-tails don’t we?
