Newslinemmi.Indians: No West Bend casinoWEST BEND (AP) — The Mesquakie Indians of Tama say they have no plans to put a casino on land they were given near West Bend.Tribal chairman Keith Davenport said the 700-acre property given by Margaret and Eddie Dorweiler is too isolated for developmentas a casino.But he said he hopes some Indians will eventually live there. The Indians now live on a settlement they own about 120 miles southeast ofWest Bend.The Dorweilers gave their property to the Indians two years ago, saying the Indians shared their devotion to protection of wildlife. The land is farmed and also supports a gravel operation, but the Dorweilers also took pride in offering refuge for deer and other wildlife.Eddie Dorweiler died last year and Margaret Dorweiler lives in West Bend. According to conditions of the gift, all of the income from the property must go to Mrs. Dorweiler while she is alive.Davenport said the Indians will protect the wildlife.“We are not trophy hunters.
