New Works. We are indebted to Mr. Cooper for the fol-lowin* valuable books t“ Merdi and a Voyage thither.”—By Hermann Melville, in two volumes, published by the Harpers Sc Brothers, New York. This is a romance of** Polynesian Adventure,” the idea of which was suggested to the author by the fact that two narratives of voyages in the Pacific, previously published by him, had been received with incredulity. He, therefore, de* termiued to write a fiction, supposing thal? “ ties versa,” the fiction might be received for a verity. The result has been the production of a very lively history of ocean adventure, of perils by sea and land, of the pursuit of the whale, and explorations among a people who exist alone in tbe imagination of the author. While we hardly think the fiction will be mistaken for a verity, we do not doubt that the work, graceful in conception, original in its design, and beautifully written, will meet with general approbation.
