'The Gondoliers'-Promises Colorful Entertainment By Indian River Junior CollegeCasilda Cooper and Casilda I Thomas compared notes at a last Thursday rehearsal on the romantic role which Mrs. Coo-per CEmiiy) is singing May 15 awl 16 i/i the Indian River Junior College production of CJUbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers and which Mrs. Thomas (Jessie) sang in 1015 in a production in Charleston, W.Va. The 1915 Casilda was more than just stage-slruelc for her leading man—they wer* married two years later in 1917. Now 11 grandchildren later, and after many musical and happy years together, Mrs. Thomas is Jiving in Fort Pierce where she is secretary for the First Presbyterian Church.Mrs. Charles Cooper is a relative newcomer to Fort Pierce but hardly a newcomer to the stage or to Gilbert and Sullivan, having taken part m several of their operettas, The Coopers and their three children moved here last year from LnGrange Park, 111. Mrs. Cooper majored in music at Danbury State Teachers Collie in Connecticut, sang in the choir of the Riverside Church of New York City and has taken part in numerous musicals and ploys. And now when she is not busy rehearsing as Casilda she doubles as a seamstress i/i Uic wardrobe depart men! whore Mrs, Henry (l-ois Hofmann holds forth as wardrobemistress with the unenviable task of outfitting the cast in cos-tumes—early Venetian style of course. Lois, h veteran of many, nuuy Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, will also be seensbiging in the production.One of the most colorful of the Gilbert and SulJivan operas “The Gondoliers1' is a bread satire on political and social customs of the past and present, The scene is set in Venice, Italy,In (he leading roles of the two gondoliers are tenor Ray Kickliter and baritone Harry Macy, with the feminine leads played by Claire Poltorii and April Hewitt JurkowskL Comedy Is provided by the singing and acting of Roy Andersen, Elizabeth Willis and Eugene Hartzell Kmily Cooper and Jerry Fredericks add the romantic jnleresl and supporting roles are sung by David Hall, Marian Erms, Jean Brown and Ka-bel Parson.The settings are designed by Jere Chumley, IRJC art instructor. Direction is by Laura Hewitt Whipple, 1KJC music instructor. Accompanists are Judy Abstein and Arthur C.
