Wings Over Jordan To Give Benefit Performance At Gstfisemane Bapti••Yielding to an urgent request from their dynamic conductor, James Lewis Elkins, who has ’ longed for an opportunity to handle the mighty WINGS OVERJORDAN CHORAL ENSEMBLE for the benefit of a Cleveland audience, Rev. Glynn T. Settle, originator and director of Wings Over Jordan ban agreed to allow his Internationally famed vocalists to break into their three day rest in Cleveland long enough to render a benefit performance in the Gethsemane Baptist Church, the scene of the birth of Wings Over Jordan, on Wednesday, May 7that 8:00 p.m.The much traveled aggregation will arrive in Cleveland the morning of May 3, to play an engagement at Cleveland’s Globe Theatre, and remain in the city through May 7th before heading into Detroit to resume their schedule of appearances which now runs wellinto 1948. Their coming to Cleveland marks the first time the organization has been able to visit this city since April of 1946. Their year's work throughout the United States has established an all time high for choral singers.A product of Kentucky, James Lewis Elkins was awarded a bachelor of science degree by Lane College, a masters degree by Ober-lin University and won a certificate of recognition from the University of Belgium while overseas in World War II. He has the distinction of having been invited as the first Negro in history to conduct the great New York Philharmonic. This history making event will take place in Hollywood Bowl in September when Wings Over Jordafi will be in Hollywood to make a picture for Warner Brothers. Mr. Elkins is working on some special scores for the Wings Over Jordan Choral Ensemble’s part in the joint recital with the New York Philharmonic.The popularity of Wings Over Jordan has reached such a height that it has been necessary for the choir to render at least two concerts daily to accommodate the tremendous crowds which flock to hear the choir. In Washington, D. C., on the occasion of their appearance. the choir was forced to render four concerts during the day in an effort to satisfy the terrific demands for their music. At the concerts in Washington, Rev. Glynn T. Settle, president of Wings Over Jordan, awarded another in the series of scholarships which Wings Over Jordan is handing out to worthy young students in music.The appearance of the worldfamed choir at the GethsemaneBaptist Church here is certain toattract an audience which thechurch cannot hold, nevertheless. 2_the sentiment of the occasion will be expressed in Rev.
