The cold water which the trout require is piped to the hatchery from Richmond springs. The water in the springs is always 48 degrees winter or summer, but the water at the hatchery is a couple of degrees warmer in summer owing to heating en route.Water Cress, the other famous spring in the park, also has a constant temperature of 48 degrees.The brook trout will die in water of over 60 degrees while 65 degrees is the limit for the rainbow and the Europe-imported brown trout.I don’t care for trout after I see what they feed them,” said one attendant. The trout are fed a conglomerate meal containing fish meal, soybean meal, wheat middlings and brewer’s yeast. This is cooked and chopped beef spleen is added. These places also provide a good going over for a man with a camera on a warm afternoon.From here the beaver, quickly becoming more numerous, waged his Iowa comeback, and fox, coon, deer, and squirrels abound. A scarlet tanager flits away as you walk down a path. There are a few wolves, but chances are you won’t see one of these lean, hungry fellows, at least not one of the four-footed variety.foMb\siscpiFFTry the “staircase” if you want a brief taste of mountain climbing. You hop down a crack in the rock, jump over a minor crevice, and proceed on your hands and knees if you are tall or well hunched over if you are short, until you come out into the sunlight on a ledge. Then you jump over a crevice four feet wide and 20 feet deep and come around on another ledge perhaps 150 feet over the trout stream.Down in the “fiat” is an ample picnic grounds and a store and on a nearby knoll is a fine band shell.There’ll be a concession at the beach, too, this year, and a carnival across the road.The main road to the park, No. 87, is gravelled, and needs some going over. It is washboard now and will be worse unless it is properly taken care of this summer. The park roads are part gravel and part blacktop.Here, in the northeast comer of Delaware county, Lamont, Strawberry Point, Dundee and all of northeast Iowa have a recreation area of which all may be proud.It's fun, but you had better have composition or rubber soles on your shoes, especially when the rocks become smooth from the feet of many hikers.This is only one of the moresensational spots to climb. Thereare plenty of others. A mountaineer would turn up his nose, but they are guaranteed to provide a flat country inhabitant with thrills.
