It was about 10 o’clock when Hon \\ W Simmons, chairman or the District Executive Committee called that body together for the purpose of the usualroutine work. The meeting of the committee was quiet and harmonious yet the disci ssion and settlement of Limestone and Lauderdale County affairs wen* brought about by contesting delegations, made the meeting warm and interesting and it was nearly noon when that lody adjourned to call the District Convention which was to meet in Echols Opera House. Hon W \V Simmons presided and when the Convent ion had assembled, the absence of delegates from Limestone and Lauderdale Counties was noted, and a committee composed of Messrs F J Kilpatrick, II lt;’ Blnford. Charles Stcvcson and C P Jennings was appointed to go to Sykes Hallwhere it was understood” that Dr H A Moseley of Birmingham had organized a convention to suit himself and secured a number of “chimney corner’’ delegates, besides those of the counties above named, and invite them (Limestone and Lauderdale) to seats in the convention. While waiting for the committee to report the convention was entertained by Mr S TVSamuels who made a strong speech urg-ing harmony and endorsing Hon Wm McKinley of Ohio for President. On arrival of the committee temporary organization was perfected by unanimously electing Dr Pitts chairman, C F Scofield of the Bridgeport News, and W A Doncgan of the Journal secretaries. The committeethen reported their inability to gain admission to the Sykes Hall meeting and stilted that Mr Peter Crenshaw of Limestone County said to them (through a hole in the door) that they (the bolters) would come if the convention would promise to recognize them. The committee had no power to make any such sweet promise and so informed the gentleman who then declared he would stay where he was.
