Vernor, who also served the city as its first mayorWondering what was happening here then, 1 dug out the first issue of The Prog-ess and below have recapped some of the news of thedayThe number one story in that issue was headlined “Aransas Pass City To Get Deep Water in 30 Days” and dealt with the dredging of a 100-foot wide channel, 84 to 13 feet in depth, from Wilson St., a few blocks south of the S A. At A. P depot, todeep water at Harbor Island.Volume 1 Number 1 also observed that the Turtle Cove Channel, 26,000 feet from the Tarpon (Port Aransas) landing straight to Corpus Christi bay was completed, with a width of 100 feet and a depth of 84 to 13 feetin depth The 1909 version of TheProgress also report that the Aransas Pass Bank wouldopen for business April 20 with A B. Phillips as cashier, and that Rockport downed Aransas Pass 9 to 7 ina baseball game.Vernor observed “The Rockport cuit is »i gentlemanly and well-behavedcrowd and Aransas will be proud to have them on another visit as soon as thelocal boys can get in a little more practice for better teamwork.”(Elsewhere in the paper.
