Early Times.Editor Index :—As I have been in Clay county fiftv years, or more, I shall give you a column of facts ou this subject. I was boru in Franklin county, Old Virginia, on the 15th of June, 1805—emigrated with my parents to Mason county, West Virginia, iu 1817. On the 6th of April, 1826,I manned Jjyuinm Uari«,ld, came flt;» this county in 1828, and settled near the present site of Cloverland on the 5th of December. Wc were acconi panied by four other families—Nicholas Harpold, Isaac Hyde, John 8 Hyde and Isaac Hall. The hardest time of all my ;ife was experienced crossing the rapids of the Wabash 111 river. The water was too low to float wlt; our craft and we worked one whole sin week in the water, in the month of P*: November, in getting our boats over, i ^ At the same time we came, Isaac j^/( Kruzau, father to the Kruzans in P1 Brazil, came overland, bringing with him his family and the horses belonging to our party. When we landed here, there were but three families within what is now Posey township, who had preceded us—William Me- jIl( Bride, Jacob Goodrich and CalebdotecnumedhsclnoJaHichlaipoprStsW£MgraconrcoatVest. At that time Posey township embraced all the territory now included in Posey, Dick Johnson, Brazil and Van Buren. The first electionfor Justice of the Peace for Posev%township was held in 1826. Wiu. McBride and Mark Bolin were the candidates, the former living near present site of Cloverland and the latter, near the present site of Harmony.
