Mar 4. and cellist Pierre Fournier, Mar 21 Continuing the White Series will be the Bach Aria Group, Nov 12; Music From Marlboro. Feb 11; guitarist Carlos Bonell, Feb. 18 and pianist Garrick Ohlsson. April 7.Along with the n'turn of two favoriteensembles, the .luilliard String Quartet and Music from Marlboro, the season brings the concert series debut of the world-famous Bach Aria Group, which appeared as a special Union Theater attraction in the 1908-89 season.Formed in 1948 by William 11 Scheide, the Aria Group is dedicated to performing the arias and duets from Bach's cantatas, a repertoire comparatively unknown but, according to one critic, remarkable for its vigor, its nx'lixlic qualities, its beauty and its infinite variety.”The Aria Group includes four vixalists and five instrumentalists. In the Bach tradition of placing vocal and instrumental soloists on equal footing.The JuiUiard Quartet, also establish'd in 1948, is described by many critics as ‘the first family of chamber music.” The ensemble last performed in Madison in the 1974-75 SeriesFrom Vermont’s famous summer Music Festival. Music from Marlboro isone of several ensembles of distinguished artists who annually take time from individual activities to carry Marlboro’s “magic and joyous music making throughout the U.S.The 1977-78 schedule of solo recitals includes the Madison solo debuts of Ms Robison and BonellMs Robison, who studied at loth the Julliard School and tlx- Marlboro Festival, is one of the charter members and resident artists of the prestigious Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, with which she perfornx*d at the Union in Octolx'r, 1978 Recipient of a top prize in the Munich Competition, Ms Robison is also tlx* only AnxTican flutist to win first prize in the Geneva International Competition.Debut tour for BonellOne of Kurope’s leading classical guitarists, Bonell is making his American debut tour this year As comfortable in contemporary works as in the Baroque and classical repertoire, Bonell is a faculty member at England’s Royal Academy of Music.Pianist Fmanuel Ax returns to the Union just two seasons after his appearance in the Theater's Debut Series “An outstanding poet-performer,’’ according to one critic.
