(Photo by Jack Folmer)Alton Area Tavern Owners Form New County Area OrganizationTavern owners of the Alton-Wood River area gathered at the Mineral Springs Hotel on March 17th to hear William (Pep) Kerwin, executive officer of the Illinois State Retail Liquor Dealers Association, who was the feature speaker of the evening. The banquet and meeting, first of its kind to be held in many months, was arranged and sponsored by the Alton Tavern Owners Association.Those Invited were told to be--there at 3:00 p.m. and from the taj an{} suggested that owners take looks of the crowd they took the an active part in all civic and invitation to mean what it said, be- community affairs. He said, “This cause a huge crowd had already assembled at that time . Prior to the banquet, which was scheduled at 5:00 p.m., a photographer for the Labor World was on hand to snap one picture of the officers and guests, and another of the remaining crowd.Elmer Faulstich, president of the Alton association acted in the capacity of chairman for the evening . He made a short address of welcome and informed the ban-queteers that the Bluff City Brewery had requested they be allowed to defray the costs of the dinner, and that their request was granted. He then introduced William 'Netzhammer, president of the (brewery, his son Billy, the brew master Jack Delin, and salesman “Sonny’’ Hayes.Next on the rostrum came William Kerwin of the state association. The chairman had introduced him as being an able speaker and this reputation he maintained Mr. Kerwin appears to be a man of many capabilities in his profession, and is certainly a forceful orator.His opening remarks were praise for the officers of the Alton association, which group he said is one of the finest in the state. He spoke of the problems that confront tav-^,' ern owners, and that these problems are the same in any town. He dwelled upon the fact that cleanliness was a major factor in the successful operation of a tavern, the employing of efficient help was vi-is the only business in the country that the people can vote in, or out, at their will.”On the subject of activities ot the Illinois State Retail Liquoi Dealers Association Mr. Kerwin gave quite a lengthy oration. He told how the state unit was a protection to every tavern owner in the state. Many bills detrimental to the tavern owners w^ere proposed at the last legislature. His organization was responsible for the defeat of these measures. He also reminded them that they had nothing to be ashamed of, being in the tavern business. Taverns were licensed by the federal government, state, county and city, and were just as legitimate as any other type of business.After Mr. Kerwin’s address, a little entertainment appeared on the agenda. A Barber Shop Quartet belonging to the Society for The Preservation and Encourage-hsept of Barber Shop Quartets Singing in America offered a few vocal selections. Members of the quartet were: Tenor, ClarenceBatchelor; lead, Denham Franklin: baritone, Arthur Brubaker and bass Carl Rosa.Next on the speakers program was Sam Harris, vice-president ol the Alton Association. Mr Harris spoke in favor of organizing the taverns outside of Alton into a county unit.
