City chooses senior siteBy Carol Andersen EditorAlgona Mayor Linda Becker was called upon Monday evening to break a tied vote of the Algona City Council regarding the selection of a community/senior citizens center site. Her vote sealed the wishes of the Algona Senior Citizens Board of Directors to locate a new center on the site occupied by the Algona Carnegie Library.Several minutes of discussion preceded the vote at the council's Monday evening meeting, rescheduled from Wednesday, March 24. Councilman Harold Relt then motioned to accept the recommendation of a site selection committee appointed by the mayorlast December to raze the Carnegie library and construct a new community/senior center there. Councilman Howard Esser seconded the motion.Relt, Esser and Councilman Paul DeLange voted In favor of the motion while Council persons LaVon Lenz. Floyd Thles and Phil Lind voted no, resulting In a tie. Mayor Becker broke the tie with her vote In favor of Relt's motion.'I was bom and raised in Algona and I fully appreciate the past.. said Becker, “but I’m also a futurist and believe we have to plan for the future. She added, “Thedecision regarding the old library has been hanging above the consciences of this community for 10 years.
