Tomorrow Is Marty Caruso Day inBy JOHN ROMANDaily Times Staff WriterMEDIA COURTHOUSE - Not many persons can say they’ve musically backed such stars as Frank Sinatra, Marlene De-itrich and Nat “King” Cole, but bandleader Marty Caruso can. «Through the world of music, Caruso — one of the five musically-gifted sons of Anthony and Anna Caruso of Chester — has had the opportunity to raise money on behalf of police, handicapped children, the blind, the March of Dimes and earthquake victims in Italy.That's why Delaware County Council has passed a resolution proclaiming Friday Marty Caruso Day, capped by a dinner that night at the Brandywine Club celebrating his 50 years in the music businessDespite his numerous activities and successes as an ambassador of music, MartyCaruso has not forgotten his roots and remains loyal to and is loved by his many friends,'' the resolution stated“It’s quite an honor — I’m so pleased,Caruso, 66, said after the council meeting this week,“In my business, people have been nice to me and I can only hope that I helped to provide some enjoyment for others through my music,” he said.Caruso is musical conductor of the A1 Alberts’ Showcase on Channel 6 featuring amateur young talents and remains the personal conductor for the Original FourAces He recently launched a new career as a theatrical agent based in Media.Marty and his brother, Vincent, president of Musicians Local 484, formerly operated Caruso Music Store and Studios inBrookhaven which was begun by their father on Seventh Street in Chester in 1926The other* members of the musical family include Marty’s brothers Tony Jr., Hank and LarnCaruso was a featured violinist at 16 with the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra and Chester Symphony. At 17, he founded his own orchestra which toured the nation.During World War II, he conducted the Army Sta^e Orchestra, backing such stars as sultry songstress Deitrich, Sinatra, Cole, comedienne Martha Raye and Orson WellesAfter the war, he joined the Dick Stabile Orchestra, which regularly played the Copacabana in New York. At that famous nightclub, he performed with Lena Home, Frankie Lciine, Theresa Brewer and Martin and LewisIn 1952, Marty left New York to return to Chester to become conductor for the Original Four Aces — A1 Alberts, then of Darby, Sod Vaccaro of Chester, LouCountySilvestri Linwood the ’50sMARTY CARUSOand Dave Mahoney, then both of — known for their hit records of4!•
