MATTERS OF MUSICTh« Symphony Orchestra—Wliat a Member of i a. the Association Says.IFT]- i »nA lady member of the Cincinnati Symphony ] Orchestra Assoctiation, and who wished to a. have a voice In the discussion of a selection of ^ a permanent.conductor for the band, has the; following to say upon that matter and upon j the approaching concert to be given by the) orchestra:• “There seems to be some misunderstanding among the papers about the engagement of a permanent leader for the Symphony Orchestra and his relations with the other musical organizations of the city. Whatever connections of the conductor should make with the Festival Association or other clubs would be a matter between himself and the organizations and would have no bearing on the Orchestra Association. There has been no thought of displacing Air. Thomas, and no communications have passed between the two organizations on the subject. There is also a tendencyto jimp to the conclusion that* Air. Van der S.ucken is the choice of the Association. , --Tnere are a number of names in consideration, i of and many applications from European leaders of high standing, among them Gericke, the former conductor of the Boston Symphony Orcnestra; Sala, a noted leader and violinist of Hanover, and many others. Such an important- step as the engagement of*a leader tor a term of years is not to be hastily de- --cided, and it would be more than premature ! of to announce any one name now, when thebyagthyepaoffth;yepaoftAssociation regard the matter as’totally un- it, settled.mlt;frlt;1T t“Meanwhile the arrangements for the final ? series of concerts for this sea.-:on are rapidly ,u approaching completion. The choice of solo-ists haii been a most happy one and will give I us an opportunity of hearing two of the ar most popular singers of the Wagner opera ' be Aladame Brema is a stranger to American : rr\ audiences, but has won instant recognition i in New York both in opera and concert a work. Her voice is of the most generous! quality and her simple methods and earnest I and sincere manner have made her a great favorite. In the recent concert with Plunket 1 Greene she fairly divided the honors with that much-rtattered favorite, and was awarded a full share of the praise of the critics. Alax Alvaiy hardly needs comment The great tenor holds so strong a place in tne affections of his hearers that wu need bur the opportunity to join the ranks of hi5 admirers. His success this winter has been but a renewal of his European triumphs, and those who have had the good fortune to see him in opera say that nis conception and rendering of his roies are ideal. **“There is a peculiar interest attaching to Stthese next concerts in th.* fact that we mav pialmost claim their leader a* our own, and that 1we shall welcome Air. Schradieek not only as conductor, but as soloist. He has consehu-d 0 ^ th£ Beethoven violin concerto, which pl w.ll also be a compliment to Mr. Brand as assistant conductor, as he will lead the ac- T companiment. 1? Tsvhaikowsky piano concerts, whichwe shall hear with 8ignor Albino Gomo at the solo instrument, is a fitting memorial to th* great Russian composer. It was one of the last compositions he ever led. The week before his sudden death Miss Adele Aus der Ohe played this concerto in St. Petersburgdirection, and received his warmet-t plaudits and congratulations.a c2»?Sf« 0 to rec«lve a sympatheticand artistic rendering by Signor Gomo »H.
