School Bars RuIt is unfortunate that the students ofGreenville high school were not allow* lt;1 to hear an address by Dave Rubinoff, noted violinist, who appeared in concert hero Thursday. Rubinoff, one of the greatest violin concert artists of all time, had areal message— a message of importanceand interest to deliver to the students, but because they felt that be wanted to make his speech solely for commercial purposes the Greenville superintendent ami high school principal decided that it would be best not to disrupt the school program.We have the word—delivered to us personally bv the Superintendent that Rubin-off wanted to address the students of the high school because lie believed that by doing so lie might increase what the school executive termed as the “take”. Well, if that was his object and had ho been allowed to speak and had attained his objective, so what? Tt so happens that Rubinoff 's appearance in Greenville was sponsored by a civic organization, theLions Club, and this organization receiveda percentage of the proceeds of the concerts. The Lions flub is a Greenville institution, just as is the high school in which Rubinoff sought to speak and wasdenied the privilege. The Lions Club, when called upon, makes liberal contributions to the programs sponsored by the high school.Be that as it may, Dave Rubinoff had a real message, a vital message to leave with the. boys and girls of Greenville high school, the only institution in which he lias been refused a few minutes to speak to students. Tie would have told them from firsthand knowledge much about wlivjj'^\should appreciate the country Vif^which they live; he would have to)d/f|lt,Tn j,owglorious it is to live in a couj^f,.v w}iere op-tTinand^ where there arc ights and privileges unknwon by the people of other nation*, lb* told the Lions Club that he would have brought those points out in his speech to the students, and the Superintendent a*d the Principalcannot take issue with us as to this statement, for they were there and heard him.You see, Dave Rubinoff was reared in Russia during a time when there was no electricity, when there were no telephones or radios, when living was in its vorv sim-plost form. Today he ran live in luxury, and because he can lie appreciates the country which makes such living possible. Tie would have liked to have told our bovs and girls about their opportunities, but unfortunately f- r them the answer, ofour school leaders no.
