r *Writer assists with minicoursesOMRO — Mrs. Marjorie Rawson of Poy Sippi was a “resource person” assisting Omro Middle School faculty in teaching “minicourses” March 8 through March 19.Mrs. Rawson is the author of two books entitled “The World at My Door, and “It’s a Pleasure.” She taught creative writing and local history minicourses.Mrs. Marian Erickson, Omro Middle School principal, originated the mini-1 course concept in the Omro district. She said each stu-: dent “has an opportunity to 1 enrich his own interests in1 an activity called related studies, a minicourse program.”Mrs. Erickson explained further that “related studies implies learning about something related to the child’s life. Skills, attitudes and values are developed during this time. The students are encouraged to explore a varietyof areas during this time period.”Everything from roller skating and archery to interior decorating and small engine repair were intensely taught for two weeks in daily two-hour blocks. Each student chose at least three minicourses from a possible list of 57 offerings.The minicourse concept, approved by the board of education last year was repeated this year. Ail facilities ofthe school and several facilities in the community were made available.Those in the community contributing to the exploratory program were St, Mary Cathplic Church, the First Baptist Church, Grace Lutheran Church, the New; Club Omreau bowling lanes, Omro Bowhunters, Omro recreation roller rink and district residents.Activities were planned on the basis of teacher talent as well as student interest. Community facilities and resident talents were incorporated. The minicourseswere categorized in the areas of self improvement, yout world, active leisure and indoor leisure.Mrs. Erickson said the purpose of the minicourse are to enable students to ex plore experiences normal!; outside available curriculum to involve students in curric ulum planning, to enable stu dents to take courses in which they can experience success, to remove the pressure of grades, to utilize faculty talents, otherwise untapped and to utilize resources of the adult community.Babli ch says he’llf A AAIAA aI \/A^ A
