Phoenixville. was ar- '**The Summer of Signs campaign which will begin in the near future will see the construction of 10 signs around the Bristol area advertising Mill St. and directing traffic towards the business district.In a talk to the businessmen. Sen. Edward L. Howard promised his support of a program to improve the intersection of Old Route 13 and Mill St. so the business district will be more readily accessible. The association met last month with Assemblvman Milton Berkes to discuss this same programThe intersection has long been a traffic problem as traffic tie-ups have been compounded by traffic at the intersection of Otter and Bath Sts. only 30 yards away.Adding to the problem is the Penn Central Railroad spur which crosses Mil! St. right at the intersection. The spur is used to shuttle tank and freight cars in and out of the Rohm and Haas plant which lies in Bristol Township just south of the borough limits.Trains coming out of the plant at 7 p m. block traffic approaching Mill St. and cause backups on Bath and Otter Sts.Just west of the problem intersection. the railroad spur and Old Route 13 run on bridges over the dried bed of the Delaware Canal. The Bristol Borough Planning Commission has been discussing a proposal to extend Bjth St along the canal bed. under the two bridges and into the Grundy parking lot. This route would bypass the intersection.Sen. Howard commended the association members for the efforts in maintaining the old shopping street despite competition from newer shopping centersHe reported on his first 45 daysin state government and said he was optimistic that the legislators were becoming more responsive to the needs and desires of the people.Reporting on the status of the association. Vice President Richman noted that membership dues totaled about $24,000 per year with individual members paying as much as $125 per month.He noted that Mill St. was still making progress and that storefront renorations are continuing.Richman pointed out that the street had survived the influx of competing shopping centers and would continue to survive. He added that much of this success was because the association had a •■godfather like the Grundy Foundation.He said the merchants were trying to combine a colonial atmosphere on the street with a modern way of doing business. Richman said Bristol was three years older than Philadelphia and that age and history were an asset to the town.Elected to the association's board of governors were Don Nichols. Bernie Ballow.
