I never thought I’d go on welfare. I’d had a job all my life. Suddenly, I had nothing.” That was 1988, and since then, Marquez has worked toward putting her life back together, and along the way, helping women who find themselveswhere she once was.*An employee of the Panama City Rescue Mission since August, Marquez, 52, soon will be able to reach many more with the opening of a longterm care and counseling center for women and their childrens On March 9, the Rescue Mission purchased a fiye-bedroom house on six acres in Springfield,, room enough for 20 women and their children to live, learn and work while they make thetransition to self sufficiency, said Amanda Harris, development coordinator for the Mission.“Eventually it will be a whole camp for women and children,” Harris said. “We saw a need to provide a program of long-term recovery for women who are homeless, abandoned, addicted or abused.“Right now in Bay County there are very few beds that serve that population.”The six- to 12-month recovery pro-■See MISSION 3AJason E.
