The characters in this play are types of big city police reporters. The authors declare they had no particular Individuals in mind when they picked the names of a few of their old Chicago newspaperfriends. |H*-* V' • * \i ’• T-» ' ;V ', aBut no one has denied the uniqueauthenticity of the bedraggled scrubwoman. Some of her appeal, of course, is due to the portrayal, for the drab habiliments of Jennie fail to hide a touch of fine artistry to that role as it is played by ZyllahInez Shannon. There is even the suggestion of a proud Princess when she dances, mop in hand, with HildyJohnson, the exuberant young Criminal Courts’ reporter, played by Roger Pryor.Miss Shannon has been well schooled in unusual character roles. For three seasons she appeared asMary Margaret, the little lame girlin Channing Pollock’s play, ‘‘The Fool.” During most of that peiiod she was with the Boston company. One of her most important roles wa# with E. H. Sothern in ‘‘Crime and Punishment.”Born in Missouri, she is of the seventh generation of a theatrical family. Inez Shannon, well known to theatergoers a decade back, is her mother. ,Miss Shannon created the role ofRuth in the Shuberts’ productionof ‘‘The Family,” by Robert Davis, and David in ‘‘The Kreutzer Sonata,” with Mme. Bertha Kalich.
