*Mental Notes - Split Enz: Chrysalis**With a few brief moments of relief, Mental Notes is a chaotic, bizarre, and unsettling collection of God-Knows-What. The only similar piece I could recall was the “Revolution No. 9” madness on the Beatles’ White Album. Split Enz has come up with an in-strumentally based version of this same type of wierdness. The cover is in no way sufficiently odd enough to prepare the listener for what s/he will experience. The one track which is entirely listenable and, if possible, has commercial potential is “Titus”, a simply arranged number which ends climactically with a tension building drum roll.Should you play this record while your parents are present, they will give up any hope of redemption that they had assumed as a result of the aforementioned Kenny Rankin album.
