' * . . r **Laredo High School Students At Pan AmIConvention EnthusedLaredo high school students who attended the ‘ state convention in Austin of the Pan American Student Forum have returned with glowing accounts of the interesting sessions at,the convention as well as the delightful hospitality of the Austin chapter.The first gathering of the groupwas the dinner dance' given in the crystal ball room of the Driskill hotel Friday evening.The address of welcome were ex-tendtd by Louis Goldberg of the Austin chamber of commerce, Supt. A.N. McCalium of the Austin schools, Charles F. ;Ralphrey of the Austin chapter and Miss Arabella Sorrells of the Colorado chapter No. 18.Various address were given, the principal speaker woe Dr. C. E. Caa-taueda, Latin American librarian of the university.He spoke on ‘‘Latin American Music and Art in American Life”.A program of dances and musical numbers was presented by members of the Fort Worth chapter.Later, dancing was enjoyed on the mezzaline floor and the floor show during the evening was given by the San Antonoi chapter.The opening business meeting took place Saturday morning in the crystal ball room of the Driskill.Various committeess reported.A resume of the year’s work was given by delegates of the following chapters: Waco, Denton, Longview,Georgetown, Lancaster, Austin, Laredo, San Antonio. Commerce and El Faso.It was decided that the state colors would be red and gold, as the nalionaj colors are blue and white,The following recommendations were also given ‘That Independent chapters should cooperate with other organizations such as Pan American Union, Pan American Hound Table*’.That Latin - American history should he taught in all senior end four year high schools and that administrators encourage the study of Spanish history department.Also important is the fact that members should be ■* 'selected for scholarship, leadership, friendshipwith Pan American movement and■any one with communistic or socialistic ideas should be excluded.’*At 11 a. m„ the convention were entertained with a. concert of Latin American music presented *t Hogg Memorial auditorium by Roberto E. Guzman (tenor) of Puebla, Mex.,h The accompaniment played by Edith Johnson.Luncheon to6l$ place at the Driskill hotel* with Uhe Denton chapter presenting the program ‘‘Spanish Anthem Hour”, featuring songs and dances.A paper on “Customs of Uruguay” was read by Miss Maria Luisarso of Denton.Later, during the concluding: business session, the following were elected officers to serve during the coming two years; Miss Charlotte Davis, of Austin,, president.: .Leo Fitch fit Dal1as, vice president and Roberto Salinas, of Laredo secretary and treasurer.
