Horn Aug. 14, 1922, in Springfield, the son of the late William Newton Steward Sr., and the late Elsie Caroline (Moreland) Steward.In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd Steward, Wiliam Steward Jr., Howard Steward, Harry Steward and John Steward; one sister, Betty Maphis; and one infant daughter, Charlene.Mr. Steward was a retired iron worker with Local 568, Cumberland. A World War II veteran, he was honorably discharged and later honored with the Normandy Diploma from the Republic of France in November of 2001.He was a life member ofPost 6667 V.F.W. in Fort Ashbyand Presbyterian by faith. Anavid outdoorsman, he loved tohunt and trout fish. He was acharter member of the Tri-State Coon Hunters Association.He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 55 years, Betty Katherine (Crock) Steward, Springfield; two sons, Ray Steward and wife Donna, Springfield and Michael Steward and wife Stacy, also of Springfield, He was the proud grandfather to three grandchildren, Neal Steward, Stacy Nestor and Bryan Steward; and threegreat-grandchildren that he adored, Breanna, Lesley and Benjamin Nestor. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Nelson of Springfield and Cora Wendell and husband Earl of Fort Ashby; and many nieces and nephews.Friends will be received atthe Shaffer-Warnick FUneral Home in Romney on Monday, March 14, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 15,2005, at 11 a.m.,with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating.Interment will be at Wesley Chapel in Points, where a graveside military service will be accorded by VFW.
