A report will be made to the loard of managers of the institution as soon as government statistics have corroborated facts gathered alxuit water and climatic conditions. Announcement of the selection made will follow. The committee left St. Louis in a private car on February 11. On the trip 1O00 miles were covered. Besides the Texas city, fourteen towns and cities were visited and sites inspected in New Mexico, as follows: SantaFe, M atrons, Las Vegas, Dem-ing, Albuquerque, Socorro, I*as Cruces, Carlsbad, Artesia, Kos-well, Alamogordo, Capitan, Fort Stanton and Santa Kosa. The committee was offered from 1lt;HN)to 100,acres of improved land within six miles of each place visited. A railroad official pledged $100,0*10 in cash and land if the sanitarium is located on the line of his road.isunshine and pure air restoredthem to health. The committeewas entertained at Fort Stanton, the government marine sanitarium, by I)r. Carrington, commanding officer. Instead of finding 2«0 helpless consumptives, we found a liody of men vastly improved in health, who were playing baseball and riding bucking bronchos. I did not hear a cough from a patient during the day. The cornet player in the band of ‘consumptives’ that serenaded us at the fort was first brought to the government sanitarium on a stretcher.Dr. Carrington stated that the hygienic conditions were such that he felt more secure in raising his children in the midst of a consumptive colony than he did in any of the Northern or Eastern cities. In one city in New Mexico the committee was offered a reservation consisting of 80,lt;mm acres. Twenty thousand acres of tableland are suitable for cultivation, 60,000 being covered with mountains and springs of pure water. Upon this reservation we could place consumptives at altitudes ranging from -Mm to 1)000 feet. The land is the richest and most fertile in the United States. As a fruit growing country it is unsurpassed by the fruit growing belt ofCalifornia.“The funds for the building and maintenance of this sanitar-theal 1wa]weito I patto f oth not bea mitWeto I fen we bot tail fine thepincryaloideedmilLanintlt;blaliareye sue the v i t igrabuiTinamvoiLa-tlirW«
