Paging through historyKathy OstranderA friend asked me w hich Native Americans lived in York County originally. 1 thought I would share some of the information I have read on the subject.Artifacts have been found throughout our area which date back thousands of years to Paleo-Indians. What is that you ask? Simply put: prehistoric or ancient Indians. Some folks have been lucky enough to find arrowheads, w hich date to these early Indians. The Paleo Indians were nomadic and made temporary campsites.Later, the Native Americans that inhabited our area at the time when the English first came here were called the Abenaki tribe, whichwere part of the Algonquin nation. The Abenaki's were not nomadic. The tribe was made up of a number of villages and had a ruler called a chief sachem. In Wells that chief sachem of 1649 was known as Sagamore, or Chief Thomas Chabinocke. Interestingly enough, when the English first began settling Wells (of which Kennebunk was then a part of) few villages could be found of Native Americans because epidemics brought by earlier Europeans such ; as small pox, chicken pox and hepatitis had come close to w iping them out. Originally Wells was called Nampscoscoke and Ogunquit was called Negunquit. Kennebunk was called Kennebunk The translation of these words, van from source to source as to their true meanings. I ha\e read four or five different definitions for the source of the word Kennebunk alone.Until the Pequot War of 1637 in the Connecticut Valley theSee History, page 17A
