The Fontanet men have been sent for to come and identify them.raneutor and/Chief of Police Beatty cl Linton have gone to Los Angeles forThe joys of a joy ride were suddenly and sadly interrupted, Monday niglit, when a party from Fontanet, Vigo county, stopped at an alleged restaurant out at Jacksonville for refreshments. The interruption camein a shower of brick bats and many other missies through the window and a young man named Guy Montgomery lost the sight of his left eye* The eye ball was badly cut, “cut in two,” some said. Dr. F. H. Beeler, who dressed the wound temporarily, says the man will never see out of it again. Dr. Beeler advised the man’s friends to hurry him to Terre Haute. When the injured man waa brought to Clinton, the police were notified, but they referred the case to Frank Madison, who has been working under the direction of theprosecutor. The prosecutor was call-Reportsthe prisoner. There is a probability that the man charged with the murder is also a member of the black hand society, which caused such a reign of terror in this city, and there is a possibility that he was implicated in the das-tarly attempt to blow up the home of Cris Pesavento, some weeks ago. A search of Torrecelli’s room in Lin-! ton is said to have revealed evidence! pointing this way.It is known the members of the society are not confined to a single locality, but are scattered to mostevery locality, where there are colonies of this class of foreigners. Chief of Police W. D. Vanness said at the time of the Pesavento attackissue a couple of John Doe warrants for a couple of negroes, who entered the restaurant while the auto party was there, and accused them of being officers, from Clinton. The men denied the accusation and an exchange of words followed. The two negroes left the restaurant, but soon after this, the rain of bats came crashing through the window. Montgomery was struck in the eye, hue the others of the party escaped In-jury.It is said the negroes are well-known about tne mining camp. Officer Madison, armed with the warrants, went out to Jacksonville, Tuesday morning. The reports indicate the assaultwas unwarranted and inspired by thethat he was of the belief the attempt! ^ the strang-was not made by a resident member,' of tl hli ? nf* i° . some, or tne blind timers which have flrmr-but by one who lived away from Clinton, and was on his way out of the city, perhaps, before the bomb exploded. After Torrecelli had left, the officers at Linton made * a search of his room and found receipts for dues) paid to a black hand society. They also found some extra large dynamite caps. This led the Linton officials to a suspicion that the alleged murderer of the Linton policeman was also implicated in the conspiracy, and perhaps the real act of blowing up the home of the Clinton Italian, who failed to come across with the money demanded.Torrecelli has a cousin and a brother in Clinton, and he was hereea short time before the Linton tragedy. He is well known by^some of the Clinton Italians and'the police say he has a bad reputation. During his brief visits to Clinton he mingled with the Italians who were under th cloud of suspicion, and there will L 110 surprise if the suspicion reported from Linton should prove correct.Immediately following the Linton! murder, the report came that the fugitive was hiding about, some o'f .tlie Clinton camps, and Patrolman %ill Lewis made a couple of searches tor him. Careful search and inquiry was made, and it is the belief that Torrecelli has not been in Clinton since the Linton murder. The officers have learned that some of the members of the black hand society have left here but know that a few of theme are still around and that letters are being sent and received. They are watching the movements of those under suspicion and believe in a short time there will be developments which will warrant an arrest. The investigations can proceed only as rapidly as facts develop. Chief Vanness says work has never ceased since the^explosion of the bomb on the Pesavento porch, and he believes the guilty ones will eventually be landed.isiied out there and which recently have had some real opposition from the officials. The auto party was composed of Guy Montgomery, David Powell, Hugh Whitney, Thomas and “Rip” Cavney, who said they were from Fontanet. They were in the restaurant, when the negroes entered ana accused them. The negroes, it is claimed, were abusive. The men being strangers claim they said very litle. They exchanged a few words, however, -and the men from Vigo county insisted they were not officers, but only fellows out for a good time. The two negroes left the place and the visitors claim they expected i no further trouble. There was a crashing of glass and the shower of bats came. Montgomery was hit, but the others rushed from the place, and say they saw the two negroes who had insulted then in the restaurant a few moments be fore. They made no attempt at ar investigation, but hurried the injured man to this city.Dr. Beeler says it is his belief the eye ball was cut with a sliver iron broken glass.JURIES DRAWN FORMARCH COURT TERMTlie following jurors have beei drawn for duty at the term, of couv to begin next Monday at Newport: GRAND JURY—J.
