Then came the depression of 1929 and the 1 company could not compete with cheaper foreign imports. To satisfy creditors, The Atlas Globe China Co. was forced to make an assignment in 1933, according to Wolfe.Oxford TileAccording to Wolfe’s “Stories of Guernsey County,” the success of The Guernsey Earthenware Co. prompted a group of men to organize the Oxford Pottery Co. in 1913. While Wolfe places the date at 1913 original stock certificates shown to this writer by Lowrance indicate that the company was founded March 22, 1916. The first $100 stock certificate bears the name of Charles F. Gross.According to Wolfe, A.O.C. Ahrendts, who had obtained a majority of the common stock of the Oxford Pottery Co., in 1934 changed its corporate title to Universal Potteries Inc.
