In our midst is one “to the manner born,” who stands on the 83rd run*? of the ladder of time, You all know the Tuley Homestead,—Main and Ninth streets,—here on February 26th, 1827,George W. Tuiey was born; here he resided tor 25 years and remembers seeing and riding on the high water of thirty-two and the failing of the stars in thirty-three. Skated to Knob creek —ten miles and back, and up the Ohio to Utica—sixteen miles and back in one afternoon. On February 22nd, 1852 he removed to Silver Hills, where he lias since resided on part of the farm he was born on. Shipyards of...Jones, Wible, Powerman, Evans, Til Ison, Hill Paine, once built and fitted out such boats as the Shotwell, Eclipse, Ward, Quitman, Yivian, Robert E. Lee, Lady Gay, Alvin .Adams, dec. As a cabinetmaker George W. Tuley did most of the ornamental work m the cabins of these boats. The city had but one hotel “Hale's Tavern.”Judge Seth Woodruff and John Trask were respectively, the pioneer minister and teacher. The Squire (by which name Mr. Tuley Is best known), received scriptural advice from one and was shingled by the other.The swampy at recta and lard oil lamps of that day are supplanted by macadam and asphalt streets, and electricity and sas.
