eflectionsBy Dorothy TaylorI can hardly wait until the computer people come out with a disk, or program, that will check for sentence structure and paragraphs. It should also be capable of checking the correct usage of homonyms, antonyms, and even synonyms. In other words, do all the thinking in the use of words in writing. After all, the computer does so many other things why can’t it really get technical with proper word usage?Mr. Gibson was correct in his editorial a few weeks back when he defined the fallacies of the Spell Check. It became more visible in my Reflections column when it found the word to,” which is a correct spelling. But, the word should have been top. After all, folks never did refer to me as a cotton to but I can certainly recall the words, cotton top.Supposedly, the language has changed somewhat since my youthful days. Some of the younger generation most likely have never heard the description of a child with cotton white hair as a towhead or cottontop. It was that way, you know. At least, Mom always vowed and declared my hair was cotton white. She used to tell me about the time she sent me to the field to fetch” Dad.Along with Dad was a dear and sweet older man, Mr. Coursey, who was always handy to help in a time of need. They were in the cotton fields working when I was no taller than the stalks. As I called out Mr. Coursey looked around. He saw the cotton top first and remarked, Look Skeet! We left a big cotton boll back there!Well, too bad about being a total blond! It changed when 1 reached the age of thirteen to what’s called dishwater blond.” Haven’t heard that term in a long time, either. Now, I do believe if I live long enough it’ll be just as it was when I started out in this life, totally white. And, that's fine with me!There is one phrase that I wished had been left alone. That is the term sleep with, or slept with. Somehow, the meaning has changed entirely. In fact, I’m reluctant to use it in today's society. When the grandchildren are visiting I certainly don’t ask if they want to sleep with me! I’ve been forced to learn a new wayof asking them to sleep in my bed, with me in it!During childhood, and one of the coldest nights I ever remember, I felt my way through the darkened house and reached my Mom and Dad’s bed. I can still feel the arms of my Dad as he reached for me, picked me up, and placed me between the two of them. Right away I could feel warmth radiating and a really special feeling swept over me. They had that special parental love turned os high that night. My particular phrase was, Can I sleep with you? I'm cold? (Even my electric blanket, in today's time, could never give off the warmth that I had felt and received on that night in the long ago.)Oh well! I can dream about a computer program that might do all my thinking for me! Then, when my remernber-er forgets something, I could just blame the computer! Or, I could just admit that I do make mistakes!Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my reamer.H
