And that includes newborn calves. But calves, all too often and for various reasons, cannot nurse during the first three or four hours of their lives. If they become ill during this crucial period, chances are they won’t survive, and the mortality rate among newborn calves is very high. So Foremost-McKesson Research and Development of Publin went to work and developed an artificial colostrum which, when used, reduces the mortality rate to zero.At the Foremost animal farm in Tracy, re^ searchers learned that pigs make excellent subjects for dietary experiments, because their digestive system is very similar to that of humans. They also discovered that sows, much like the human female; often develop a serious constipation problem immediately after giving birth. Kenneth Hicken, vice president of Marketing and Product Development, reealls “In sympathy, Foremost-McKesson developed a product known as Sow-Lax, which is exactly what it sounds like.” The sows, undoubtedly, were greatly relieved.Smiling, Hicken continues, “A few years ago we were trying to perfect a new ice cream flavor.
