And that includes newborn calves. But calves, all too often and for various reasons, cannot nurse during the first three or four hours of their lives. If they become ill during this crucial period, chances are they won’t survive, and the mortality rate among newborn calves is very high. So Foremost-McKesson Research and Development of Publin went to work and developed an artificial colostrum which, when used, reduces the mortality rate to zero.At the Foremost animal farm in Tracy, re^ searchers learned that pigs make excellent subjects for dietary experiments, because their digestive system is very similar to that of humans. They also discovered that sows, much like the human female; often develop a serious constipation problem immediately after giving birth. Kenneth Hicken, vice president of Marketing and Product Development, reealls “In sympathy, Foremost-McKesson developed a product known as Sow-Lax, which is exactly what it sounds like.” The sows, undoubtedly, were greatly relieved.Smiling, Hicken continues, “A few years ago we were trying to perfect a new ice cream flavor. Black Forest Torte. We ran into one big problem: The chocolate torte and the vanilla ice cream had different freezing temperatures. In test after test, either the ice cream remained, a semi-soft oozing mess, or froze so hard It couldn’t be penetrated with a drill, let alone a spoon. Finally, after several months of trial and error, we developed a successful complicated injection system — and immediate-lurvrl anqfontAnit ’♦most Company was just a dairy company. Its founder, J. C. Penney - the J. C. Penney — started what was probably one of the first dairy co-ops, hack in Jacksonville, Florida, several years ago. In seeking a name for the company, he chose that of his prize bull, ‘Foremost.’ The coop quickly spread into the midwest and south and eventually to California where it merged with the old Golden State Dairy, but kept the name of Foremost.” The merger with McKesson-Liquor and McKesson Robbins Drug it Chemical Company took place in 196ft and the company became known as Foremost-McKesson, Inc.Today, Foremost-McKesson is the largest U.S. distributor of pharmaceuticals, alcoholic beverages (in the states east of the Rockies, they are the exclusive distributors for the California wines of Louis M. Martini and Wente Bros.), and chemicals. It is a leader in the dairy industry in the western states, and the largest U.S. supplier of bottled water. The company is also engaged in residential and commercial property developments. They currently have. 40 major housing developments under con-mos* ■*iem m astern states.
