Local hams in Relay League contest emphasizing Civil Defense valuesThree local ham radio operators John Harrington, 14, left, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Clevenger, 1209 South Garrison, and John Patrick, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hartford Patrick, 1843 Gar-dendale, participated last week end in the annual American Radio Relay Ieague amateur radio contest.The event is sponsored to interest citizens, in ham radio operations and to stress the importance of such operations to the Civil Defense system. Ham radios would become a major form of communication in the event of a national emergency.Simulated emergency conditions were maintained 27 hours with the use of two transmitters powered by a mobile gasoline generator built by John Harrington. The boys talked to more than 600 other ham operators in 40 states and Canada.There are five classes of ham radio licenses —no vice , technician, conditional, general, advanced and extra advanced. A working knowledge of Morsecode is required of all operators.John Patrick is a novice operator and the other two qualify as general operators. To achieve general operator status, it is necessary to pass a Federal Communications Commission examination. Harrington received his general operator’sSIKESTON, Mo. (AP) - The collision of a farm truck and a car about one mile west of Sikeston Monday evening injured 28 persons.The State Highway Patrol said a trooper reported on arriving at the scene that “people were lying everywhere.”However, only two were injured seriously.The patrol said 26 persons were riding on the farm labor truck driven by Joel Wooten, 70, Route 1, Benton.The car was driven by Everett Isaacs, 49, of Stillwell, Okla. His wife was a passenger.Isaacs was taken to the Vet-license at 13, making him one of the youngest general operators in the area.Results of the contest, based upon the number of contacts made according to the type of power employed as well as publicity efforts and actual messages transmitted, will be announced in November.erans Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., for treatment of head and eye injuries.Alice Fulton, 15, of Sikeston also suffered multiple injuries.The others were treated and released.The patrol said Wooten was cited for careless and imprudent driving and failure to yield right of way.
