A local man recently presented a set of souvenir gold records to D.J. Fontana, the man who drummed behind Elvis Presley during the singer's peak hit-making years.“I've known D.J. for a long time,” said Patrick Woertink, of Apple Valley. “I've been wanting to give him these gold records for oyer 20 years.”Woertink, who first met Fontana in the 1980s, finally presented the framed gold records last month at Presley’s “Honeymoon Hideaway” in Palm Springs, where the singer honeymooned with his bride, Priscilla, in 1967. The occasion was a celebration of what would have been the couple’s 46th wedding anniversary.At the event, Fontana, now 82, played drums in a re-creation of the set of songs he performed with Presley on the landmark comeback television special in 1968.“He played with the drumsticks on a guitar case, like they originally did for the ’68 comeback special,” Woertink said.Woertink is the owner of Legend Gold Records in Apple Valley, where he manufactures custom gold records to order. In his spare time, he presents souvenir gold records as a gesture of respect to pivotal figures in rock ‘n’ roll.
