Ruth scored a 1-up decision in 19 holes over Ty at Fresh Meadow country club yesterday. Cobb won the opener, 3 and 2, at Boston Wednesday.The paid gallery totaled few more than 100 and the total crowd of spectators, officials, press and photographers was less than 300. More than 2,000 were attracted at the Boston match and USO officials hoped for even more support at Detroit where Cobb is a legend.Cobb’s putter was not as hot as it had been on Wednesday and hemissed a six-footer that would have given him a half and prolonged the match yesterday. It was a see-saw match throughout with Ruth winning the first two holes and Cobb coming back to take a one-up advantage on the first nine.Both were wild from the tee on the back nine but they came to the 18th all-square. They halved it and went out for the sudden death playoff. Cobb hooked his drive, hooked his second, and his third was 35 feet to the left of the pin. His first putt was six feet short.Ruth got on in three and down in two putts and Cobb had to drop his for a half. He lined up the putt twice and studied the contours of the green before he tapped it.
