Boris Karloff and Beia Lugosi, those two delineators of eerie character roles, who made themselves famous in ‘‘Frankenstein1' and “Draqula, respectively, are seen gnashing their teeth at each other in “The Raven, which opened Thursday as the chief picture attraction at the Orpheum theater.“The Raven is a stirring, imaginative film, requiring a lot of dnr-ing on the part of Hollywood to tackle Poe, and especially his The Raven, which probably is the most sensitive thing he ever wrote. The plot of the piece is, of course, purely imaginative, with the symbol of the raven supplying the motif of the narrative. A mad doctor, Vol-lin, is suffering from a torture complex and sets out to demonstrate) his theories. His principal victim is an escaped criminal, who comes to him to have his face changed* The doctor distorts the man's features and makes a slave of him; then he casts a spell over a beautiful girl, and when her father tries to save her he is himself caught in the delirious machinations of the mentally unbalanced doctor. The legends of horror and mystery that surround the mystic writings of Poe have been carefully expounded in the picture, some of the unusual places and things mentioned by Poe in his works being duplicated for this screen feature, with the sets built for the production assuming the air of an ancient museum. It is a picture crammed to the hilt with thrills and chills, and is entertaining all through.Comedy . and drama vie in the second feature on the Orpheum’s new biLI—Lady Tubbs. which stars Alice Brady. Miss Brady exemplifies her versatility in the picture, for she has long been noted, both on the New York stage and in the films, as a dramatic actress and also as a comedienne of definite ability.Completing the OrpheumV new program is an all-color Miclccv Mouse cartoon, titled The Band
