FORT MADISON PARTVHAVING GRAND TIME.H. L. Schroeder Writes Some Particulars of Their LongWestern Trip.Portland, Oregon, Jane 22, ’05.Dear DemocratA few lines fromthe Fort Madison party oat west maybe of some interest to yonr readersand our friends. The evening of Sunday, Jane 11,we spent with our old schoolmateBen Luebbers at Los Angeles. Ourparty were pleasantly entertained bythe host and hoBtess at their beautifulhome on Newton avenue, and a rightenjoyable time we had. Ben is headclerk ef a paint house and is doingwell, but I am sorry to say he is nottaking President Roosevelt’s advice inpopulating the country.Monday, the 12th, we left for SauFraucisoo. Saw the vessel that waswrecked off the coast near SautaBarbara. You probably read about it.It was a vessel loaded with lumberfrom Sau Franoisoo to San Pedro. Agreat part of the lumber was washedashore. We could see the waves beatagaiust the vessel and tho largerones go over it. Quite a sight for aland lubber. The train was stoppedten minutes, so all could have a goodlook.Stopped at Santa (Jruz for a day—acity on the beach and famous for itsbig trees. The trees may not be aslarge as in the Yosemite Valley, butsome certainly were monsters, over300 feet high and twelve feet through. The scenery over the mountains wasgrand and picturesque.Arrived at Sau Fraucisco at 10:30Tuesday, June 13. The Knights ofUolumbus entertained the visitingKnights with the usual Californiahospitality. Everything was free except your board and lodging and aroyal time they showed as. At LosAngeles we were entertained a week, not only by the Knights, but also bythe Elks, who helped the Knights toentertain. I was told the Elks andK. of C. work together, a spirit thatshould be fostered everywhere.Friday evening, the 16th, we leftfor Portland. The next day, whilechatting, who do yon think we met?Our old Fort Madison boy CharleyTomson, who was delighted to see somany Fort Madison people at onetime. Charley bad seen the notice ofour departure in The Democrat andhad been watcning for us at everytrain. Charley wanted the wholeparty to stop over. They not beingwilling, he insisted on Mrs. 8. andmyself to speud a day with him atCastle Rock where that famous wateris bottled. To say that we were royally entertained does not express it.Charley is one of the principal owners, and is manager of the works andgrounds. It is a stock company composed of traveling men. They haveabont 200 acres, upon which these famons springs are located. The location is beautiful, in the Sacramentocanyon or valley. The Sacramentoriver with its pare and crystal watersflow at the bottom, where we enjoyedthe evening in fishing, catchingenough mountain trout for breakfast.Talk abont flue fish, ah' but theywere delicious. Besides bottling thefamons water, of which they shipabont 2,000 cases a month, they aremaking a summer resoit at the place. The place is comparatively new, active work commenced only lastsummer. They have eleven cottagesand twenty tents aud a large andcommodious hotel that will acoommodate abont iiftv people. If anyFort Madison people should ooine thisway they mast not fail to stop overat Castle Rock. It is abont half waybetween San Francisco and Portland. We will assure them they will neverregret it. Charley is married and hasa lovely wife aud three robust andhealthy children, two girls and a boy,the boy the very picture of his daddy. The Eagles of Redding had a big picnio there the day we left, which wasSunday. We were awfully sorry thatwe ooold not stay longer, it was sorefreshing and restfal, but all goodthings must come to an end, so webad to bid Charley aud family adieuaud move on to catch oar Liends atFPortland. We read from clippings that yon hadan awful rain, doing much damage, but glad the old town was not washedaway. There is no place like home.Fort Madison is good enongb for me.Our party is beginning to scatterMr. and Mrs. Wilnen, Mr aud Mrs.Henry Ritter, the Misses Ella, Claraand Minnie Rump, Grace Onstott,Herman Luebbers, Mrs. Schroeder
