Methodist Student Wins Singer Memorial at Purdue; 3 Students Get Hillel Keys at Annual Awards AffairW. L A FAYETTE---Thomas Eugene Ingels, chemical engineering student, of Kokomo, is the 194’ winner of the Samuel Singer Memorial Interfaith Award, conferred by* Dr. Frederick L. Hovde, president, Purdue University, at the annual commencement exercises.The award, a $100 scholarship, is annually given to the Purdue student who has done most to promote interfaith good will and amity. bringing about better understanding among the members of the various religions on the campus. » *Mr. Ingels has teen active in student religious affairs since 1943 as a member of the Board of Wesley (Methodist) Foundation and superintendent of the Wesley Sunday School. Since 1945 he has served on the governing board of the Purdue Interfaith Council of which he became president for the academic year 1946 1947. He also has been president of the Wesley Foundation during the past year. Under his leadership of the Interfaith Council, various group activities were sponsored to promote better relations between faiths. He served on the executive committee responsible for planning and carrying out the Religious Emphasis Week program in the fall.The award is made annually at Purdue University through the medium of B’nai B'rith . Hillel Foundation and is a gift of the Samuel Singer Memorial Club of Chicago, in Samuel Singer who gave his life in a heroic rescue attempt in Lake Michigan several years ago. Intimate friends and relatives have kept his memory alive through numerous benefactionsof educational and philanthropic nature.3 Get Hillel Keys Three outstanding student leaders received the coveted Hillel Honor Key and w-ere inducted into the national B’nai B'rith Hillel Foundation honor society, at the annual Awards Dinner at Purdue University, last week. Rabbi Meyer H. Simon director of the Hillel Foundation made the presentations to Lionel H. Minnen, student president, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Jean C. Zelomek, »«_v.retary-treas-urer, of Rochester, N. Y., and Sara N. Jaffe, Indianapolis. The awards are given annually to the students who have been most active in leadership of Hillers program.Dr. Alfred Jospe, director of B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation at Indiana University, was the guest speaker* »Other awards in recognition of service to Hillel went to Joseph Bernstein, Bayonne, N. J.; Ralph Elyachar, W'aldo Margulis and Harold Hirschmann, New York; Joseph Matt, Philadelphia; Evelyn Litowich, Chicago, Stan ley May and Murray Hack, New York; and Herman Amster, Lafayette. These awards were in the form of Jewish books and etchings by Jewish artists.The awards dinner was held in the Purdue Union Building with representatives of Bra ziliai Lodge, B’nai B'rith, and of the university faculty in attendance.Heads Community Fund Rabbi Simon, also spiritual leader of Temple Israel, was elected to the presidency of the Community Fund of Greater Lafayette, at the annual meeting last week.
