Andrew Humphreys was at the head of a large force of Gueril-' / . : lt;a • ' ; ; * _ _in this. County. The statement is false in every particular. There are no. G uerrillas in Greene County—unless the Atfmon Leagues,, have formed a; elan ofand we are certain that Mr. Humphreys could not be induced to have anything to do with such a class of traitors. On the other hand, Mr. H. hasspent a considerable time in this county in making speeches in behalf pf the Constitution and the Union; and on,©very ocr casion has advocated and advised the people, to obey the laws, so long as they were on our statute books. If there were such laws as they did not approve, to wait and trust to the ballot box to bring about a change of rulers, and consequently a change of all obnoxious and ruinous laws.—\ Greene Co. Paper. .t* f ’—Mr. Humphkeys-; is the object of no little malicious slander on the part of his political opponents. He doubtless feels little encouragement in endeavoring to restrain the intemperate zeal of his neighbors and friends in their enmity to theillegal and arbitrary measures of the powers that be, except in . the consciousnessthat it is right. During the late predatory raid in this county, which was supposed to be for his arrest, he made a speech tothe excited populace, counseling obedience to law, and urging them to /disperse to*. ■* v - * * • » . . . ■their homes. Mr. Oowgjll, the, deputy* m ' 1 ^ ^ # Provost Marshal, was present, and at theconclusion gave Mr. H. hisdiand, assuringhim that he cordially endorsed his remarksand expressing surprise at the’character of the speech; that he had heard he was urging the people into, rebellion,.but wasagreeably disappointed.
