Walter PartanenBESSEMER — The funeral for Walter P. Partanen, 75, of Puritan Location, Bessemer, who died Wednesday will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Friek-Zielinski Funeral Home, Bessemer, the Rev. Thomas Kuusisto officiating.Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. There will be no visitation.Mr. Partanen was born Jan. 29, 1914 in Puritan Location, son of the late Peter and Hilta Partanen, He attended Bessemer Township Schools and graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in 1932.He graduated from Gogebic Community College in 1934. He obtained a degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University in 1936. He received a degree in X-ray technique from the Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in 1939.After starring in Bessemer’s undefeated U.P. championship football teams of 1930-31, he played football at Gogebic Community College and Ferris State University.He also played professional football for the Green Bay Packers, the St. Louis Gunners, and the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1936 to 1940.Also during that time, he was a professional wres'tler.On June 25, 1938 he married the former Gertrude M. Thebert at Ironwood. She died April 19, 1984.He was employed by the Gogebic County Sheriffs Department, the City Service Oil Co., various iron mines, the Northwest Motor Bus Co., Grand View Hospital, and at Veterans Administrationhospitals in Hines, HI., and St.Louis, Mo.He retired from White Pine Copper Mine, as an electrician in 1976.He was a former Bessemer Township Fire Department member.He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur (Barbara) Sehade of Lansing; three sons, Thomas of Bothell, Wash., James and David of Bessemer; eight grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
