Chutistplummetsto groundKANE, Pa. (Ar j - fcgt. l.C. Joseph Stone, a decorated Green Beret paratrooper, was standing by the open door of a cargo plane during night maneuvers when his reservechute opened.In a second he was sucked out the door and slammed against the plane’s fuselage before dropping through the darkness toward the dense forests of northwestern Pennsylvania.His main chute opened, and Stone came down in a tree about four miles east of this McKean County community. He dropped 25 feet to the ground when a branch holding his chute broke.The accident occured Thursday as the plane approached its drop zone.About 200 regular Army and reserve troops along with Kane volunteer firemen searched through the night for Sgt. Stone, finally finding him along a forest road nine hours later.He was taken to Kane Community Hospital, then transferred to the Kane Armory for two days’ observation. Authorities said he suffered multiple bruises but apparently no other injuries.Stone is rated a master parachutist, and won the Silver Star in Vietnam.
