When ’he prr j -ct of a Fourth of July celebration was first broached no one thought it would reach such magnitude as it is now assuming It will be a big thing in every sense of the word, and the local merchants are ex-rtu-g every energy they possess to make Traverse Ci'y the center o' patriotism for the state on that day. The manner in which the business men and manufacturers are making preparations as surcs a demonstration that would be a credit to the biggest city in the state.Alfred V Friedrich, chairman of the parade committee,** a whole wh rlwind in himself when it cornea to getting up a big thing, and the parade on the Fourth will astonish the visitors to the city on that day The floats to be put in the parade will be novel, beautiful, complete and indicative of the enterprise and genius of Traverse City’s leading business men and organ /.k* tions Thus far Mr. Friedrich has been notified that there will be about forty floats in line The local labor organizations will make a big display, and as this is the first time they have madeany pnb ic demonstration in this part of the state their display is looked forward to with considerable interest.The manufacturers will introduce some floats that will illustrate in a practicalway the importance of our industries, and the merchants will show their public spirit and up to dale methods by spieudid displays. The outfit is on the way and is expected any day The basement of the factory is being rapidly prepared for the storage of pota'.jes and when finished it will hold 60,000 bushels Bins will be arranged along the sides with sloping floors, so that the potatoes can be run iuto a chute and carried by. machinery to the upper pirt of '.he building.The company will begin ouying potatoes next week and wiii get in about 30,000 bushels. This s’, ck will be ust d to test the machinery and to get the plant in thorough working condition before beginning regularly on the fall potatoes. Reports from the committees of the L • 'gshoremen and t'u* carpenters’ urn .u were heard. It was decided to tak-1 i»*rt in the celebration and to that e. i *Dolt;it 510 will be used. The cigar maker*, about forty in number, will march in the parade, and will probably have some very pleasing attractions in connection. The Longshoremen, who number about 10. and the carpenters, about «’•'» in number, will also take part in the celebration All three of the unions will raise funds and will endeavor to make a big showing. as their intention is to turn out in a body.A great interest is being taken by *11 the uuiou workmen iu the celebration, and they will endeavor by all means to make as big a showing as possible.The Military Display.The military display wUl be the largest ever seen here and the most distinguished. The G A R. will turn out in great force and McPherson Post will be reinforced by visiting members of the G. A K from surrounding towns.Company M will form an important part in the big parade. The company held a meeting last night to make preliminary arrangements and it was decided to invite members of the 35th Michigan volunteers in this part of the state to join the demonstration. Therecompanies for two tracks to run in front of the factory, the two latter using the same track.The products of the factory can thus be loaded direct up in cars and shipped to all points.Work on the dextrine factory will be started at once th. foundations being already laid. Rapid progress will also be made on the boiler and engine bouse.The contract for budding the new dock has been let to Joseph Beauvais of Charlevoix. It will be 600 feet long and is feet wide. A double track will be laid so that tram cars can carry the potatoes as they are unloaded directly into the factory. The largest boats will be able to lie at the dock. In this way potatoes can be brought from any point on the bay or lake. Work will be begun on the dock today.Captain Beauvais has also taken the contract for a large well to be sunk near the boiler house. It will be twenty feet in depth and twelve feet in di ameter. The bottom of the well will be ten feet below the level of the bay and by the time the water reaches the well it will be t torougbly filtered, making water of excellent purity and admirably adapted to the uses of the making of starch.As before stated the company will buy at once about 30,000 bushels of potatoes and by the time the fall c.op comes in this will be a splendid market for all the farmers can raise. So well docs the factory impress farmers that the acreage this year will be largely in excess of any previous year. The dock is built for the convenience of farmers id the vicinity of the bay shore at a distance who ship their products to the factory by vessel.
