d feat of Braddock, when Washington waB made commander-in-chief of the Virginia colonial troops, and stationed at Winch* ster. We believe our readers will thank os for giving them the ex. tract from Irving, as presenting a graphic picture of the *‘state of the country*’ at thaf remote period, (September 1755.) Here it is :Washington, having visited the frontier po6ts, established recruiting places, and taken other measures of security, had set off for Williamsburg on military business, when an express arrived at Winchester from Colonel Ste-pheiis, who commanded at Fort Cumberland, giving the alarm that a body of Indians were ravaging the country, burning the bouses, and slaughtering the inhabitants. The express was instantly forwarded after Washington; in the mean time, Lord Fairfax sent out orders for the militia of Fairfax and Prince William counties to arm and hasten to the defence of Winchester, where al) was confusion and affright.— One fearful account followed another. The whole country beyond it was eaid to be at the mercy of the savages.— They had blockaded the rangers in the little fortresses or outposts provided for the protection of neighborhoods.— They were advancing upon Winchester with fire, tomahawk, and scalping-knife. The coumry people were flocking into the town for safety*—tne townspeople were moving off to the settle* ments beyond the Blue Ridge. The beautiful valley of the Shenandoah was likely to become a scene of savage desolation.I H f il Vi At if 1 f A P f Vi A aavi fiinvit is said they saw no white people during their journey. Arrived at their destination, however—Carolina—a joy ful surprise awaited them. A brother they found had all the way preceded them about a dny’s journey, without either party being aware of it.Isaac Julian selected the place of residence in Randolph county, North Carolina, upon which his grandson has recently died, as wo have said. The original deed, still in the possession of thefamily, bears date 1762, but he became possessed of the property some yeat'6 previous, and it has now been in the exclusive occupancy of the family for over one hundred years. The old gentleman died from the bite of a rattlesnake. His! son Isaac, who was born before the flight] from Virginia, came into possession, un j til his removal to the West. Belorei dividing it with his children, the place consisted of one thousand acres of land —not unlikely, however, it was of a quality which rendered the possessor the poorer, the more he had of it.We had these preceedirig facts a few vears since from Mrs. Elizabeth Cox, of Richmond, a sister of Bohan Julian, and she obtained them from the lips of Mrs. ] Mary Odell, the oldest child of the first Ioaac Julian. Mrs. Odell was some fifteen years of age at the time of the Virginia troubles which we have referred to. ~.i .i___
