He lived and died on, I the same farm where he was born, where his father had lived before him, and where his grandfather had selected a home on his removal from Virginia more than a hundred years ago, and had jlived and died. What a contrast with (the emigrating and changing spirit of the present fast age, particularly here at the West!But the mention of this factsuggests, as a connecting link some unwritten annals of the Past whieh—even at the risk of being charged with vanity in demonstrating, as we shall be compelled incidentally to do, that we are entitled to the doubtful honor of being descended from one of F. F. V’s—we canno* forbear recording here, believing they will be found of sufficient general interest to warrant us in so doinsr.About the time of Braddoek’s defeat, Isaac, the grandfather just referred toof Bohan Julian, a son of the first ofthat surname in America, was living, a' O'youngish married man, near Winchester, Virginia—probably about a peer in age of and certainly well acquainted with Col. George Washington. That was then rather a frontier settlement, and the danger of being attacked and murdered by the Indians was imminent and alarming — more so than a*, any subsequent period, because the Inv dians were more numerous and powerful, and the settlers less protected. Indian panics were therefore not uncommon.One of these, as connected with our subject, we had previously heard nar rated by members of the family, and we find its authenticity confirm *d by Ir-ving’sLife of Washington,Vol. 1,ChapterXV ill. It occurred shortly after the d feat of Braddock, when Washington was made commander-in-chief of theconducted them prisoners to town.The reported attack on the house of Isan Julian proved equally an absurd exaggeration. The ferocious party of Indians turned out to be a mulatto and a negro in quest of cattle. They had been seen by a child of Julian, who alarmed his father, who alarmed the neighborhood.“These circumstances,” says Washington, “show what a panic prevails among the people; how much they are all alarmed at the most usual and customary cries; and yet how impossible it is to get them to act in any respect for their common safety.”They certainly present a lively picture of the feverish state of a frontier community, hourly in danger of Indiau ravage and butchery ; than which no kind of warfare is more fraught with real and imaginary horrors.The alarm thus originating had spread throughout the country. A captain, who arrived with recruits from Alexandria, reported that he had found the road across the Blue Ridge obstructed by crowds of people flying for their lives, »yhcm he endeavored in vain to stop.—The}’ declared that Winchester was inflames !It is added, that the band of Indians whose ravages produced all this consternation did not exceed one hundred and fifty in number. They shortly after recrossed the Alleghanics, and quiet wasrestored.It was only temporary however. Another panic, no doubt much better founded, was the cause of the removal of most of the Julian family farther South. So great and imminent was the apprehended danger, that Isaac Julian, who had a farm well stocked, left all save his horses—which ho took to aid his flight—his farm, standing crops, sheep and other stock, his house and most of its contents, and, with his famil}, sped night and day for the South. Their flight we believe it is stated began after night, and was perhaps to a considera bio extent so continued. They passed occasional camp-fires and other evidences that their neighbors were also floe-ing, which was the fact, but we believe it is said they saw no white people during their journey.
