(obituary—A Link with the Past Broken, but Brightened.1)ied, ftt liis residence in Randolph Co., 'North Carolina, on the 6th day of April ;last, of palsy, Bohan Juman, aged nearly ,eighty-four years.j Tho deceased was the eldest son of Isaac and Sarah Julian, who, with all (the rest of their family except one oth-!er son, emigrated to Indiana at an early ‘day, and a brother of Isaac, Rene, Jacob, and Shubal Julian, well known in ;tbe early history of Eastern Indiana, the two last named being still living. The subject of this notice was a man of sound sense and strict integrity. The ^appreciation of his character by his fellow citizens is shown by the fact that he was elected, wo believo repeatedly,• to tho Legislature of his nativo State, jand to other important trusts. Residing in the Western portion of the State, j where slavery has ne\er so extensively prevailed, and where a Quaker community followed the preaching of Job Scott and other ministers of Friends at an early day, and sharing to some extent in the views of that society, Bohan Ju«Iian, we think we may safely Bay, wasin principle a decided but not noisy J Anti-Slavery man. We believe that was his reputation at home. lie was a Democrat, but, as we bad it directly ,from himself a few years since, a Jeffer-jsonian Democrat with respect to political and governmental matters, the subject of slavery included. He died while ;the clouds of treason and war, which have since cast their “blackness of darkness” even ever his own native State were rising portentously over his country, a plague and scourge called up by the slave oligarchy of the South ; but with the sentiments we have indicated, we caDnot for a moment permit ourselt to believe that he viewed their infernal machinations with any other feelings than unmixed reprobation and abhor tives. He would have taken the field at once against the savages, believing, their numbers to be few; but not morci than twenty-five of tho militia could be» mustered for the service. The rest refused to stir—they would rathor die with their wives and children.Expresses were sent off to hurry up the militiaordered out by Lord Fairfax. Scouts were ordered out to discover the number of the foe, and convey assurances of succor to the rangers said to be blocked up in the fortresses, though Washington suspected tho latter to be “more encompassed by fear than by the enemy.*’ SmithB were set to work to furbish up and repair such fire-arms us ■ were in the place, and waggons were sent off for musket balls, flints, andprovisions.5{C 5j« 5fC £ I'fi JfcIn the meantime the panic and confusion increased. On Sunday, an express hurried into town, breathless, with haste and terror. The Indians, he!isaid, wero but twelve miles off; they hadj attacked tho house of Isaac Julian; the, inhabitants were flying for their lives.; Washington immediately ordered thc: town guards to be immediately strength-: ened; armed some recruits who bad just! arrived, and sent out two scouts to rec onnoitre tho enemy’. It was a sleepless night in Winchester. Horror increased with the dawn, before the men could bo paraded a second express arrived, | ten times more terrified than the for-! mcr. The Indians were within four miles of tho town, killing and destroying all before them. He had heard the constant firing of the savages and the shrieks of their victims. !Tho terror of Winchester now pass-j ed all bounds. Washington put him-' self at tho head of about forty men, militia and recruits, and pushed for the scene of carnage. !The result is almost too ludicrous forrecord. The whole cause of the alarm proved to be three drunken troopers,1 carousing, hallooing, uttering the mostunheard of imprecations, and ever and anon firing off their pistols. Washington interrupted them in the midst of their revel and blasphemy, and, conducted them prisoners to town. !The reported attack on the house ofTo nr » T tv I i a r% t 'v n a t* a /I ii ■« a 1 1 w a a*/! !
