The FostReflectionsmmmmmDorothy TaylorSaw* ‘V .I’.’.V.V.'r.':lt;v.V.You might know that books are a part of me and the worse part of aging is getting a few pages read and then the eyes can’t stay open. The suffering that takes place in the need to sleep is unreal. But the Senior Saints Summit I attended in May at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor temptedime to buy just one more book.My shelves are filled now and I love every one of those dratted books. But, I just added another to my collection called, “On the Way to Heaven with a Covered Dish,” and it was written by Lou Brown, a preacher and comedienne. He is also a gifted speaker. In fact, he spoke to the banquet held for the Senior Citizens and told about killing his first turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. Then he said a very loud, “BAM.” Next he quoted, “The folks at the Grocery Store were almost frightened to death.”My Dad would have enjoyed his type of preaching.Of all the things that my Dad loved doing it was laughing. The jokes thrown into a sermon ever so often could keep up his interest because you had to keep listening for fear you might miss something funny. Example: “It seems like every other year, another war breaks out somewhere .. .Beirut, Yogoslavia, Croatia, Iran...it must be God’s way of teaching us Geography. Before the war in the middle east, I didn’t know what a Kuwait was. Ithought it was a fruit froift New Zealand.” (So declares Lou Brown). In the long ago they didn’t have funny preachers telling jokes all the time. Mostly they had the shouting kind who told the truth with lots of vim and vigor. Perhaps in those days the fellow called td preach wasdetermined to scare those attending the*services to bead for the road to heaven; And, as far as I know they didn’t cotton to*the needs of the older folks. The older age*homes came into being in later years and served as places needed to help others with whatever was needed. Thus, the journey for the older folks is made easier for all involved. In addition to Summits they call gather-* 4*ings of the older citizens, “Chautauquas”.*Some of such gatherings take place in Glorietta, New Mexico, Ridgecrest, North Carolina, and Green Lakes, Wisconsin. And, I’m sure that other churches have a variety of names to include on such a list. The strangest part to me is that I am even tihinking along these lines. When life was just beginning the word Chautauqua sounded more like an Indian group to me. And then, something else I learned atthe Senior Summit was what to do when♦your daughter started dating. She was to place the Bible on the car seat between herself and her date. When the date started moving towards her she was to move the Bible and declare, ‘You know you’ll have to crawl through Matthew, Mark, Luke, andJohn!.”■The reward is that you never get too old to learn, even though the mind does slow a bit along with other body parts.Ephs.4:17 “But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.”
