Billy Paul to sing at Newport FestivalHOLLYWOOD - Billy Paul, 36-year-old soul and jazz singer, will be among the performers at the Newport Jazz Festival West at the Hollywood Bowl Sunday.Haul recently won a rhythm and blues Grammy Award for his two million plus selling single “Me and Mrs. Jones.” He is also a gold record recipient for his album “360 Degrees of Billy Paul.’’A childhood friendship with Bill Cosby brought an 11-year-old Billy Paul to station WPEN Philadelphia where he would sing tunes like “Our Lady of Fatima and Nat King Cole medleys. Vocalizing at a local Baptist Church, Paul also trained at several musical academies.Paul’s “360 Degrees” album is currently flanked on record racks by two older re-releases. The selfproduced “Felin’ Good at the Cadillac Club” and “Ebony Woman’’ have been re-packaged by Phildelphia Inemational in a futuristic jazz styling.Paul’s appearance at the Bowl is part of the “Touch of Jazz and Soul’’ program presented by George Wein in his Newport Jazz Festival West. - Other artists on the 7 p.m. program include Gladys Knight and the Pips, B.
