For the next twoours a movie will take place here. A film entitled “The Witches ofastwiek, baaed on the novel of the same name by John Updike.Welcome to Eastwick Population ... that's not really important East-ick isn’t a very happening town A cat in a tree would probably causeysteria of epic proportions It’s a nice place to visit, but PLEASE don’tve there Three of its citizens can very well relate to that last statementAlexandra Medford (Cher), Jane Spofford (Susan Sarandon) and ukie Ridgemont (Michelle Pfeiffer) are three lonely women who areoking for an exciting mate, someone from out of town of course “A tall, ark prmoe under a curae ... a stranger.” Want and ye shall have.Into town cemqe a stranger. A stranger who moves Into the Lenox ansion which la rumored to have been the location of many witch(tinheA stranger whose name is forgotten before you can utter it. WhoHis name is Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson) and he possesses a ther devilish personality. He has come to Eastwick to satisfy the wishes f the three bored residents while at the same time transforming them to witches, unbeknown to the women at the time.None of the other citizens are aware of Deryl’s identity nor his inten-ns. Wait a minute, i take that bacx. One person DOES know A Mrs.Felicia Gabriel (Veronica Cartwright) senses that something evil is present in Eastwick.the saying goes what you don’t know won’t hurt you, but Felicia does know, and as a result she has a rather nasty fall which Is only a warning of things to come. As time goes on, the powers of the women become honed. Not until a tragic accident that had been a wish between the three women actually happens do they realize what type of power are dealing with.With this new insight they decide to sever all ties with Daryl, asdifficult as this may be. Daryl, on the other hand, can only feed on the thoughts and desires of others, meaning the lack of affection brought on by the women s neglect affects Daryl’s appearance, personality, etc Since he feels that he’s been tossed aside like yesterday's news, hedecides to seek revenge on the women by exposing them to their worst fears. •':'^- '':'-3r -tThe witches” realize that theonly way to escape the clutches of evil is to force Daryl to leave, so they pool their powers together and come up with an extremely clever “going away present.This film is unbelievably entertaining. Cher continues to prove her acting abilities, but the persona that Nicholson has acquired over theyears shines through like a bail of fire. I highly recommend this film.
