office gathering, theMOST REFRESHING SIGHTcan be witnessed at the many groceries and provision establishments, where father and mother and landlord are engaged in laying in a bountiful supply of good cheer for the next day’s feast, and showing by their generous purchases of the good things of life the thrift and prosperity which so abundantly prevail in our midst.But while the seekers after letters and eatables are numerous, thePLEASURE SEEKERSoutnumber them two to one, and however attractive the postoffice and provision stores may be, the places of amusement seem to out-rival them. If none of the public halls are open, the lager beer saloons ore crowded to repletion, and from an early hour until midniglit, when the proprietors, actuated by a wholesale fear of the law, put up their shutters, the merry laugh, the convivial song, and the suggestive click of glasses may be heard at these popular resort*. Fort Wayne has some really metropolitan beer places, among|which, John Leichner and the Atlantic Garden, Jnlius Kabisch’s, and Fred. Breil’s, are the mos* generally patronized. By organs, silver bands and free In riche?, foaming lager and slegantly fitted up saloons are among the inducements held out by the proprietors of these establishments; and they seem toprove alike powerful with all classes of society, for Saturday night brings the rich and poor, the high and low, the ignorant aud educated together in these places Many enjoy themselves with moderation, and go home refreshed and benefitted by sensible indulgence; but large numbers also make Saturday nights the black spots of their lives, and at each recurring end of a week add one more debauch to their already long- list, and finish up their drunken spree in the holy hour of the Sabbath.In the summer one of' thePLEASANTEST FEATURESof Saturday night and Sunday is the large number who drive out on our well paved streets with their nobby “turn outs,” presenting a pleasing picture of enjoyment, which is admired by all, and envied by most of the leBS unfortunate individuals who are compelled to pedestranize.
