Susan Sarandon. John Beck and Raf Vallone. and all four could not havebeen more perfect for theirparts.Fisier plays Noelle Fage. a poor French girl who falls in love and has an affair with an American in the R A F just before the outbreak of World War IIBlinded with love and trusting in her youth, shebelieves her lover’s promise to return and marry herHe fails to show up on the day he specified, and Noelle waits, first in hope, then in bitterness, and schemes for eight years to get him backSarandon is the educated American girl. Catherine, who also falls prey to the charms of the lover-boy pilotIn her role. Sarandon Ls equally admirable, playing Catherine as an awkward, scatter-brained girl who manages to work her way up in a top public relations firm on the East Coast. Catherine eventually marries lover boy only to end up the miserable wife.Between the two women is John Beck as Larry Douglas, whose caddishness is well-hidden behind his polished charm and a handsome face He uses women to his advantage with no qualms whatsoever.The build-up in the plot is slow lt;the film is 2 hours and45 minutes long) but it’s essential in developing thepersonality of eachcharacter.A few segments could have been eliminated (some scenes with Beck and Pisier in Paris seem suitable for Clairol commercials) but the scenery chosen by Fred J.
