Liberace WinsLibel ActionLON’DON fAP — \ high court j,;ry awarded American entertainer Liberace £8.000 damages today for libel by the London Daily Mirror.The jurors decided after 34 .hours of deliberation that a story 'in 19^0 by Mirror columnist William V Connor implied that the pianist was a homosexual.The implication was untrue, the jury held, and the phraseology used by Connor in the column was not “fair comment, ' as claimed by The Mirror. SECOND NOT PROVEDThe libel action contained a lesser second count, based on another Connor column, but the jury found this count not proved.The second column noted that The Times had carried a notice of a Liberace concert in a current events listing devoted largely to religious doings and called it the sacred next to the profane ”The jurors held this to be fair comment The trial lasted seven days Court reports estimated the cost, including lawyer fees, at around £1.000 a dav.After the jury had returned, the judge stated he had received an anonymous letter which he described as a “sinister and squalid attempt to prevent the course of justice.’’ He said he is sending it to police authorities, but did not elaborate further.As Liberace. smiling, left the court, a crowd waiting outside closed in on him.
