10—Ttw Cumberland News MondGreen Spring Youth Dies In FlamesFire Destroys Frame Building Early SundayA 15-year-old Green Spring, W.Va., boy died in a fire which destroyed the two-story frame building in which he lived shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday.Hampshire County Sheriff J. M. (Chick) Buckbee identified the dead boy as Charles Edward Steward, 15, son of John Steward of Cumberland. He lived with his uncle, Robert Earl Steward, who was considered his foster father.Cause of the fire was unde* termined because flames destroyed the building.Visit NeighborsHowever, Sheriff Buckbee learned that the boy and his uncle had been visiting neigh-hors. The boy left, telling his uncle that he was going to fix some French fried potatoes. Relatives related that they had a deep fryer which was used on an electric stove. They presume that it became too hot and exploded, engulfing the frame building in flames.Friends and neighbors were unable to rescue the boy, whose body was burned beyond recognition, the sheriff said.Sheriff Buckbee, said the boy and his uncle lived in a second-floor apartment above a vacant storeroom which had once been a tavern in the Hampshire County community.Two Green Spring women were brought to Sacred Heart Hospital for smoke inhalation and shock. Mrs. Wanda Nfewlon, 20, and Mrs. Virginia L. Smith, 43, both were treated and released.About 75 firemen from five volunteer fire companies responded to the early morning alarm but all they could do was J^eep the fire from spreading to other buildings. First to arrive was the Oldtown Volunteer Fire Department, which traveled the privately-owned toll bridge across' the Potomac River to reach the scene. West Virginia volunteer firemen came from Romney, Springfield, Patterson’s Creek and Fort Ashby. Stays Until 5:30 Sheriff Buckbee, who said he arrived shortly after getting word of the lire, was at thei scene until about 5:30 a.m.The youth was a student at Romney Junior High School.Also surviving are his father, John F. Steward, Cumberland; his mother, Mary Lou (Carder) Steward, Chicago; two sisters, Darlene F. and Diane L. Carder, both of Chicago, and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Steward, Green Spring.The body is at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Rotnney,’ where friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.Services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m* at Green Spring United Methodist Church, Burial will be in Forest Glen Cemetery.
